RIP Frankie Knuckles
I thought it was an April Fool’s joke when I read the news this morning as I woke up but then I realised that you don’t make jokes about this kind of thing. Legend is an over-used word but Frankie Knuckles is a true legend to house music. There from the days of disco, through to when he moved to Chicago to head the Warehouse club and still relevant to 2014. Known as the Godfather of House – house music would have still existed without his input, but it is arguable that the music that makes our world go around …
RIP Gary Tweddle
Gary was not one of my closest friends but his enthusiasm, spirit of adventure and positive attitude left quite a lasting impression on me. I was saddened to hear the conclusion to the heart-breaking story, and my thoughts go out to his family and loved ones. Far, far too short a life, but one that will be remembered by so many others for far, far longer. That so many people have followed the story to conclusion, with compassion and positive thoughts proves the impact that my friend had. Having read some very moving tributes from some very close friends, it …
Margaret Thatcher
I guess this blog post is nearly as long-expected as dearest Margaret’s passing away. I thought about doing a post last Monday night about her influence on the country, her legacy, etc, but there was so much commentary elsewhere that I decided against adding to the wealth of opinion. I wouldn’t exactly have been breaking new ground by arguing how she saved the country. The question I would prefer to answer is why I personally hold Lady Thatcher in such a high regard despite coming from the north of the country and why I revere her so much – why …
RIP Donna Summer
Normally I don’t feel the requirement to comment upon the passing away of someone I have never met, Amy Winehouse being the sole exception that I can recall. Nothing wrong with doing so but I try to keep status updates and blogs upbeat and positive and I don’t find it so easy to do so in the context of death. I will at least endeavour to spell Donna Summer’s name correctly in the title, as I just realised I misspelled Amy Winehouse as Whinehouse, a Freudian slip perhaps, and a strange person perhaps for me to comment upon given that her music wasn’t …
RIP Amy Whinehouse
It is indeed a very sad story. I have no interest in her music, I am led to believe it is very good but it doesn’t tickle my tastes. However, there is a greater story here of a human being. And I do hope that anyone who has appreciated her music, appreciates that you have to look after those around you – and they will in return. It is very easy to turn to substances to help you perform, they might be a hell of a lot of fun in the right place and time, but they are not necessary …
