What I Discovered In Hull Recently

You can get crab in Hull I do not like crab. Trip Advisor has very limited suggestions for Hull.  And for East Yorkshire.  Which leads me to conclude that there either isn’t much to do, or nobody uses the internet there. I often got a 2G network.  And very occasionally, 3G. Footgolf is a thing.  Not only did I beat my sister, which is fairly imperative to manly pride, but also I got a hole in one.  I am the man. There are no beards in Hull. However there are plenty of cool bars in Hull now, especially in some …

Cover Image for The Christmas Blog

The Christmas Blog

I arrived home two days before Christmas. “What have you done to your hair”, was the first thing my mother said.  Quickly followed up by “you’ve put on weight”.  Yeah I kind of know that already given that I weigh myself about 6 times a day and record both my morning and night weight every day on a spreadsheet.  I do know I have put on weight. So I quickly popped out to the chip shop.  Can you believe someone asked for cod?  WTF?  Clearly an immigrant. That round thing is a pattie by the way.  Chip spice on the …

Cultural Tour of Hull

A couple of good friends of mine went to Rome this weekend.  But Rome is so last millennium when it comes to culture, so I went to the true City of Culture this weekend, Hull. Starting with the most obvious which was fish and chips.  The round thing is a pattie.  You won’t get fish like that down here you southern puffs.  Get to Hull.  Get fish. If you want culture, the best stop is usually the tourist information office.  So we made this our first visit on Saturday.  I asked the lady what she could recommend – her response …

Enlightenment From Hull

I wouldn’t normally consider a trip to Hull a week before Christmas but there was no way that I was going to miss my Grandma’s 80th birthday disco, sharing with Maria Sharapova, Pete Tong’s wife and the local bakery (according to the table line-up).  Oh and some nurses. There is lots of enlightenment, as usual, to provide to my dear readers. Firstly I would like to prepare you for the step back in time that I took, with the train from Doncaster.  Sadly too dark by this time to take photos from the train journey, but I do have one of …

Mummy’s 60th Birthday

I suggested to my mother at the weekend that I was going to mention about her on my blog on her birthday- she told me not to dare. So as I feel that I missed out on my rebellious teenage streak as I never quite managed to get arrested by the proper police, only the crappy transport police, despite years of trying, I shall rebel now. I like family weekends.  They are a good excuse to recharge the batteries both physically and mentally, though a fair few glasses of wine were drunk.  It being my mam’s 60th birthday today, the …

The Motherland

I have been to the Motherland…yes, back up north to Hull and I can tell you that nothing has changed since I last visited…which was Easter.  It is kind of nice though, everything is pretty reliable. I had a good time with the family and caught up with the only friend from school that was worth keeping in touch with, which was well overdue…but I don’t want to bore you so I have some pictures instead: This was a sculpture that I made after pub dinner on the Sunday My mother does not like me messing around with things.  Good …

Date For Your Diary – I Think Somebody Loves Me

Before I get to it, I must just get something off my chest.  I work for a huge global corporation, who now generally only employ graduates – it being such a large building, there are of course jobs there that do not require such qualifications and business experience, such as the cleaners, or catering staff, who are all very polite and respectful. On coming down to the breakfast bar this morning, there was a group of three…people (I cannot think of anything to class them as) causing chaos by the breakfast bar, as if they owned it, and wouldn’t let …

Tourism In Hull

I have a long-standing dream of taking all of my friends for a weekend in Hull, if only to remind them of how good they have it living in and around Reading. But there are actually a couple of things in Hull which attract visitors, apart from a large amount of people willing to engage in violence and the possibility of getting a pint for less than £1.50. Firstly, The Deep, the world’s only submarium.  Yes, I appreciate that there is no entry in either Wikipedia or http://www.dictionary.com/ for such a thing, but this doesn’t stop the linguistically challenged of ‘Ull from using …

Back From Hull & Wedding Planning

So in case you hadn’t worked it out, I am back from Hull, and feeling refreshed and re-aligned. Or I was on Monday afternoon anyway until I realised that no bank holiday weekend should go without a bit of a session, shame I picked the night before work to do it, oops. Anyway, there is nothing like a trip to Hull to remind me of why I live in Reading.  I would like to think that my temporary unsettledness of the mind last week has been put to rest for a while.  The BBC have been writing about how tough …

We Don’t Lose Away (and other things that have amused me)

I cannot say that I have had the most inspiring week of my life. However, there are things that still amuse me.  And I always feel the need to share.  Sharing is good.  Sharing makes one happy.  Spread the love, and all that hippy stuff. Firstly I have decided that I am going to go to more Hull City away games.  I know football may not be at the higher end of interlect, but I really enjoy the camaradery and the banter of my brothers from Hull. We have shared many decades of dispair, only to find that suddenly things are looking …

Alarming!

I have 7 alarms set now to wake me up in the morning, albeit all on my telephone which is perhaps where my problem arises – not one of them went off the other morning – very strange. Thankfully I did manage to wake up in time – somehow.  Quite scary though that I could easily have slept through. The other day I came across a leaving speech for when I worked at Natwest, circa 2000-2003 (I keep all sorts of sentimental/amusing crap) – in it was quoted my lateness record for the first 4 months probationary period which was 6 occasions – not the …

What Exactly Did I Do In A Previous Life?

So I decide to take a short lunch break, however as I approach the exit of my employers beautiful building, the bus pulls away. A full 5 minutes early. So I walk to the Basingstoke Road to get a different bus, two minutes away from the bus stop and yes the bus goes by. No point in running for it. But if I had have done so, I would at least have got the other bus following behind. It seems the world likes to poke fun at me sometimes. Not quite sure what I did in a past life. I only took a …

Hull Humour

The sense of humour from Hull can be rather self-defacating at times – and with good reason – the place is a shit-hole and there isn’t much to shout about. Hence my opinion of Reading as tropical paradise – something that anyone not from Hull who has walked down Oxford Road in Reading would have me locked up for suggesting. But the Oxford Road is quite tropical – have you ever been to a tropical island and strayed away from your nice safe hotel complex? Anyway, same with supporting the football team, Hull City, most of the time, except for …

Me & House Music

Given that Sven Vath has put a link to my review of Cocoon In The Park, I feel I should elaborate a little more about what my relationship is with house music, in the hope that it might get a few more people to understand house music. Growing up in Hull, in the north of England, it wasn’t the nicest of places and there was little hope for the future. Grim, would be a good descriptive word. But as early as 1990 when I was about 10, mid-way through the Kylie Minogue & Jason Donavon thing, I begun to realise …
