Sven Vath & Cocoon @ Building Six 22/11/2014

A year isn’t a year unless I have danced to Papa Sven and it is my 10 year anniversary since I saw the Cocoon light, ditching the likes of David Guetta, Paul Van Dyk and Erick Morillo for a far more sonically satisfying, albeit at first a rather confusing form of dance music.  Where is the drop?! I really wanted to go to Sven’s 50th birthday in Mannheim, I deeply felt I should given how much Sven means to me but the finances didn’t allow (plus I don’t like the music that the two main supporting DJs play – Richie …

Cocoon at Building Six 30/11/2013

Sven at Matter back in 2009/10 was just a match made in clubbing heaven and when Matter sadly folded and became the dross that it was in the intervening years, there was a hole.  A big hole. Maybe like the dreams of a perfect world of global peace and an economy that would always grow, circa the turn of the Millenium, it was just one of those brief moments of a utopian life, cruelly taken away with a return to reality. Sorry but you cannot have things that good. However when LWE announced that they had gone into partnership with the …

Cocoon @ Great Suffolk Street with Sven, Cassy, Carl Craig & Onur Ozer

I bought my ticket in June for this.  I like to be prepared.   A mini-disaster nearly struck during the week when my wonderful clubbing partner announced that she would not be able to make it however I had bought my ticket so long ago that there was no pulling out for me.  I didn’t want to go by myself but I was up for the adventure.   A slight side-track perhaps but beforehand I went to an all you can eat buffet place for dinner, and had lots of gravy.     Yes, even on dessert.   You can …

Sven Väth & Cocoon @ Electric Brixton, London, May 2012

You very likely know that I adore Cocoon, and Sven is my ultimate life hero.  Even more than Peter Andre.  Unless of course you have never read my blog before in which case these two ideas must be implanted into your head which I hope I have done.   I wasn’t sure how it was going to work at a venue like Electric Brixton, but I wasn’t going to let any unfair judgements put me off going – this was the first time Sven has been to London in 2012, and the first Cocoon event I had attended in 2012. …

The Infamous Cocoon Book

I had a request recently to upload the photos of the Cocoon book that several of us did back in 2009 (apologies for not doing it sooner but they were on an old phone and I have only just found the charger and cable to switch on and upload.  Actually that is bullshit, I was too busy partying, so thank Verizon for making me unemployed so I can do the things I have been meaning to do over the past few years). The story goes that one night with a distinct lack of sobriety and arguably, sanity, I decided that …

Sven Vath at fabric, May 2011

Last November, Sven Vath was to play fabric – my favourite DJ at my favourite club, the first time for about 6 years I think.  I left having had a fantastic night but Sven hadn’t been the star of the show – which is what I am used to, so perhaps I was a tiny little bit dissatisfied. A couple of months ago I heard Sven was due to play again at fabric on 21st May, and I have seen him countless times over the years, and I always think he is at his peak in the months before Ibiza …

Themes From Vapourspace

Do you ever wake up in the morning and think, “Why did I buy that?”.  This time, I don’t even have the excuse of inebriation, given the parlous state of my finances. No, but I can blame Sven. I found this video of Cocoon (Frankfurt) from New Year 2010/11, and it is typical Sven Vath at his typical suspense building, thunderous techno best. The track is by Vapourspace, whom I have never heard of.  Probably for a good reason, seeing as their album came out in 1993. After being inspired by track names such as “Gravitational Arch Of 10” and …

fabric (with Cocoon)

This weekend just gone was one of those fairly rare weekends where everything looks so exciting, and everything and everyone comes together as planned quite spectacularly. The highlight was always going to be my trip to fabric, only my third this year – for Cocoon – also my third Cocoon event of the year. I did expect that my favourite club night at my favourite nightclub with my favourite DJ playing should be the most amazing night ever.  So much was my expectation that I was a little apprehensive on the way. Alas, it was not the most amazing night.  …

Me & House Music

Given that Sven Vath has put a link to my review of Cocoon In The Park, I feel I should elaborate a little more about what my relationship is with house music, in the hope that it might get a few more people to understand house music. Growing up in Hull, in the north of England, it wasn’t the nicest of places and there was little hope for the future. Grim, would be a good descriptive word. But as early as 1990 when I was about 10, mid-way through the Kylie Minogue & Jason Donavon thing, I begun to realise …

Cocoon Ibiza – Party Animals

So the theme for Cocoon Ibiza this year is ‘Party Animals’. Some people question why a club night should have a theme – isn’t all about the music? Sure, it would be nothing without the music but I’m all for a little silliness and entertainment, whenever I go to Cocoon especially in Ibiza, there is always something going on around me, it is impossible to get bored, always something to look at – whether that be new dancers, crazy costumes, videos, lighting effects, Sven being…well…Sven. And this encourages the crowd to be more entertaining in themselves too. And it makes …
