James Went To Lake Bled

Yeah I went to a lake. This post shouldn’t take long, but Lake Bled was the original inspiration for my Trieste to Ljubljana trip – in fact I think I was mesmerised by a Windows ’97 photograph of Lake Bled.

OK, perhaps not Windows ’97, but it first came to my attention via one of the photos that loads up on my PC quite some years ago.

I’d already clocked that Slovenia was stunning, from my first night in Ljubljana.

Lake Bled didn’t disappoint. Basically a lake in the more mountainous regions, with a castle on one side, and a small island that you can get a boat to in the middle.

I didn’t do the boat, nor the castle in fact, but I did walk up a pretty steep hill in the fairly hot sunshine for a view:

Now that is a money shot.

So as well as pristine clean waters with plenty of fish, it was surrounded by forest, and then mountains.

It really was like a fairy tale.

Getting To Lake Bled

I got the train here, which stops somewhere called Lesce-Bled. There was a bit of confusion as I knew you had to get a bus, but the bus numbers in Google for Slovenia are like “536354893246”, and then a number 51 turns up going somewhere you’ve never heard of.

I just followed people. Oh and I did my kind deed for the day by paying the bus fare for an American tourist who didn’t think you might need cash in the countryside…ooops.

As well as loads of hiking routes, you could hire various types of boats, go swimming, I think there was some kind of cable car – not sure to what.

Plus, I’m sure it would look stunning any time of year, especially with some snow. Gosh the lucky souls who live nearby.

Plus I managed to have a pretty nice piece of fish there…not from the lake. Well, I assume not.

And then it was time to make an even more confusing journey home. Which bus to catch? Well, I just asked drivers when buses turned up, the first one told me to get the bus behind, then the bus behind left.

The next one turned up 15 minutes later and said he was going to Lesce-Bled, but charged me more than the way there. And then proceeded to give me a fairly long tour of Slovenian countryside which was not on the bus route, or at least the route I was expecting.

Oh and then the train station had no platform numbers.

I really hope I get to go back to Lake Bled one day…stunning place.
